December 26, 2024 – The College of Local Administration (COLA) at Khon Kaen University has taken a bold step in redefining cultural heritage with its innovative research project, “Mo Lam and the Creative Economy: Transforming Innovation and Cultural Entrepreneurship in the Virtual Society.” Led by Asst. Prof. Dr. Sirisak Laochankham, Dean of COLA, this project is set to revolutionize the way traditional Mo Lam performances are perceived and utilized in the digital age.
The project’s presentation was graced by Prof. Dr. Sompong Klaynongsruang, Director of the Thailand Science Research and Innovation (TSRI), alongside key executives from the Budget Bureau. Their visit to Khon Kaen underscored the importance of this initiative in advancing Thailand’s national strategy for science, research, and innovation.
Reimagining Mo Lam for the Digital Era
At the heart of this research lies a mission to transform Mo Lam, a beloved traditional performance and cultural treasure of the Isan people, into a thriving creative economy. By leveraging technology and online platforms, the project empowers Mo Lam artists and cultural entrepreneurs to adapt to the virtual society, ensuring the art form’s relevance and sustainability in an increasingly digital world.
The project envisions Mo Lam as more than just a performance—it aims to elevate it into a form of soft power, showcasing the rich cultural heritage of Isan on a global stage. Through innovation and collaboration, Mo Lam is being redefined as a bridge between tradition and modernity.
Key Highlights of the Project
- Empowering Communities Through Knowledge and Skills
The research team serves as a vital link between the university and local communities, transferring knowledge and fostering innovation. By focusing on upskilling, reskilling, and introducing new skills, the project ensures the sustainable growth of Mo Lam performances. It targets young people, returning residents, traditional Mo Lam artists, and cultural entrepreneurs, creating a collaborative platform for creativity and innovation.
- Cultural Mapping Database
A comprehensive Cultural Mapping database has been developed, cataloging over 79 cultural products and services related to Mo Lam. This includes performances, costumes, stage design, traditional music, performance equipment, production venues, and live-streaming services. The database highlights the interconnected supply and value chains, offering a holistic view of the Mo Lam ecosystem.
- Introducing the “Mo Lam Metaverse”
In a groundbreaking move, the project has launched the first-ever “Mo Lam Metaverse” prototype. This virtual space brings Mo Lam into the digital realm, featuring lifelike avatars of performers, including lead actors, actresses, comedians, and dancers. The Metaverse is divided into two immersive sections: a performance area designed to captivate audiences with virtual Mo Lam shows; and an educational area that delves into the history and evolution of Mo Lam across different eras.
The platform also connects users to the social media accounts of various Mo Lam troupes, enabling them to follow updates, view performance schedules, and purchase tickets for exclusive online shows. Visitors can even access the cultural mapping database for a deeper understanding of the Mo Lam ecosystem.
A Vision for the Future
The ultimate goal of this project is to transform Mo Lam into a global cultural phenomenon and a key player in the creative economy. By integrating tradition with technology, the project positions Mo Lam as a powerful tool for cultural diplomacy and economic development, ensuring its legacy for generations to come.
