In a vibrant display of faith and community spirit, Khon Kaen University successfully hosted its annual Kathina ceremony on November 2-3, 2024, at the serene Tha Rat Temple in Ban Dong Pong, Sila Sub-district, Muang District, Khon Kaen. The event, led by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Chanchai Panthongviriyakul, President of Khon Kaen University, brought together university leaders, faculty, staff, and devoted Buddhists from all walks of life to partake in this revered Buddhist tradition.
The ceremony was graced by the presence of Dr. Luang Por Prateep Sanyamo, the revered abbot of Tha Rat Temple, who presided over the monastic proceedings. The weekend’s events included a vibrant celebration on Saturday, November 2, followed by the solemn Kathina robe offering on Sunday, November 3. The collective generosity of the participants resulted in an impressive total donation of 1,557,164 baht, underscoring the community’s commitment to supporting the Buddhist faith.
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Niyom Wongpongkham, Vice President for Arts, Culture, and Creative Economy, highlighted the significance of the Kathina tradition, stating, “This cherished practice is a cornerstone of Thai Buddhist culture, fostering the growth and prosperity of Buddhism. This year, Khon Kaen University proudly organized two Kathina offerings. The first, held at Thepnarintharam Temple in Udon Thani Province on October 26-27, raised an astounding 2,229,763.25 baht. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to everyone involved for their unwavering support and dedication to preserving this beautiful tradition.”
Dr. Luang Por Prateep Sanyamo praised Khon Kaen University for its dedication to continuing this auspicious tradition, which provides Buddhists with the opportunity to cultivate merit through precepts, meditation, and charity. He echoed the Buddhist proverb, “Sukho Punyassa Uccayo” (Accumulation of merit brings happiness), and expressed his gratitude to the university, led by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Chanchai Panthongviriyakul and his team, for their generous contributions to Tha Rat Temple.
This year’s Kathina ceremony at Khon Kaen University not only strengthened the bonds within the Buddhist community but also highlighted the power of collective goodwill, raising a remarkable 1,557,164 baht in support of the temple and its activities.
