KKU Unveils Revolutionary Sodium-Ion Battery Golf Carts at Srinagarind Hospital

In a groundbreaking move towards sustainable innovation, Khon Kaen University has introduced cutting-edge sodium-ion battery-powered golf carts at Srinagarind Hospital, offering free public service and setting the stage for future commercial applications.

On October 30, 2024, a distinguished team from KKU, including Assoc. Prof. Dr. Charnchai Panthongviriyakul, President of the University, and Prof. Thidarat Boonmas, Vice President for Enterprise and Sustainable Society, proudly handed over these state-of-the-art vehicles. Developed by the university’s Battery and New Energy Factory, this initiative is part of the “Production and Testing of Sodium-ion Battery for Electric Golf Carts” project, funded by the 2023 Innovation and Enterprise Development Grant.

The project has successfully produced prototype sodium-ion batteries for three models of golf carts—2-seater, 4-seater, and 6-seater—now operational at Srinagarind Hospital and other university facilities. The handover ceremony was graced by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Pattarapong Makarawate, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, and Prof. Dr. Alisara Ruangsaeng, Director of the Bio-Hyten Prototype Factory.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Charnchai Panthongviriyakul highlighted the significance of this innovation, stating, “The sodium-ion battery is a testament to our commitment to pioneering sustainable energy solutions. It leverages the rich mineral resources of Northeast Thailand, promising substantial economic benefits and positioning us at the forefront of the battery industry.”

Srinagarind Hospital has already integrated these advanced batteries into their 4-seater golf carts, enhancing the efficiency of transporting medical staff and equipment. These batteries offer superior safety, greater energy storage, faster charging, and enhanced durability compared to traditional lead-acid batteries, ensuring longer operational periods with minimal downtime.

The sodium-ion battery golf carts are a glimpse into the future, manufactured by KKU’s Battery and New Energy Factory, which adheres to ISO 9001:2015 standards. As Thailand’s first certified producer of cylindrical lithium-ion batteries, the factory’s products meet rigorous international standards, including IEC 62133-2, IEC 62660, and UNR136, ensuring top-notch performance and safety.

Beyond golf carts, the factory’s innovations extend to electric motorcycles, AGV vehicles for industrial use, and energy storage systems. With the integration of IoT technology, these battery packs offer real-time monitoring and performance tracking, marking a first in Thailand and supporting the safe use of second-life batteries.
