KKU Architecture Students Triumph in International Bamboo Design Contest with Innovative “Fishing Net” Project

A team of visionary architecture students from Khon Kaen University, known as the BAM BOO RANGERS, has put Thailand on the global map by clinching the First Prize (A) at the prestigious 7th Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area ASEAN International Colleges Design and Construction Competition. Their groundbreaking project, inspired by the traditional art of casting fishing nets, beautifully marries the essence of riverside life with contemporary architectural design.

Held from October 14-18, 2024, under the theme “Shadow Following the Wind,” the competition challenged participants to push the boundaries of bamboo architecture. The BAM BOO RANGERS, comprising six talented fourth-year students—Mr. Suttipong Kamthit, Mr. Wuttichai Kotcha, Mr. Chayanon Chinwong, Mr. Chonlasit Putthisakul, Mr. Phongsakorn Chanjam, and Mr. Pasathorn Keela—rose to the occasion under the expert guidance of Assoc. Prof. Kulsri Tangsakul.

Their innovative design, which earned them a cash prize of 30,000 baht, a certificate, and a trophy, captivated the judges with its creative use of bamboo. The structure, reminiscent of a fishing net being cast, features intricately woven bamboo strips and dynamic wind turbine mechanisms that play with light and shadow. This artistic endeavor not only reflects the cultural tapestry of the Mekong River but also incorporates sound-producing bamboo tubes, echoing the traditional practice of splashing water to gather fish.

The competition was fierce, with anonymous judging ensuring a fair evaluation of each entry. The results, announced via a Zoom meeting on October 24, 2024, marked a significant milestone in showcasing the innovative potential of local materials in modern design.

Mr. Chayanon Chinwong, speaking on behalf of the team, shared that their project draws inspiration from the Mekong River’s rich cultural heritage, bridging traditions between China and northeastern Thailand. The team’s journey involved creating a 3D model, developing presentation materials, and constructing a functional model, all while overcoming the challenge of unifying diverse ideas into a cohesive masterpiece.

This victory not only highlights the exceptional talent of Thai students on an international stage but also underscores the importance of integrating local wisdom with cutting-edge design. The experience has honed the students’ skills in teamwork, time management, and problem-solving, preparing them for future endeavors.

The BAM BOO RANGERS’ success is a testament to the versatility of bamboo, demonstrating its potential beyond structural use to create flexible, sculptural forms that captivate the imagination. Their achievement paves the way for new opportunities in architecture and design, proving that local materials can be transformed into contemporary masterpieces that are both functional and aesthetically stunning.
