Khon Kaen University was joining the network to host for the first time in the Me Kong Region the “PME Regional Conference 2023” in which researchers and experts exchanged their mathematical knowledge and expertise, with an aim towards internationalization.

Saturday December 2, 2023 – The Institute for Research and Development in Teaching Profession for ASEAN joined the Mathematics Education Association, Center of Excellence in Mathematics, Center for Research in Mathematics Education, Khon Kaen University, the Education for Development Foundation in Thinking Skill and the Mathematics Certification Institute of Thailand, held the PME Regional Conference 2023 under the topic: “Mathematical Thinking Skills in the Digital Era: Regional Episode”, at the Institute for Research and Development in Teaching Profession for ASEAN, Khon Kaen University through the hybrid conference format.

Assoc. Prof. Maitree Inprasitha, Ph.D., Vice President for Education and Academic Service of Khon Kaen University said that the Conference International Group for the Psychology of Mathematics Education (PME) or the International Conference on Mathematics has been scheduled every year since 1977, for experts, educators, researchers, participants and PME members all over the world to learn and share their experiences and knowledge together. Thailand was honored to co-host the 44th PME in 2020-2021.

This time, the Mathematics Education Association and the Institute for Research and Development in Teaching Profession for ASEAN of Khon Kaen University hosted the conference again, and it was the first PME Regional Conference of the CLMV countries. The topic this year was “Mathematical Thinking Skills in the Digital Era: Regional Episode”. Over 200 participants from 14 countries attended.

“The International program committee gave us the chance to organize the PME Regional Conference 2023 with an attempt to build the network of the countries in CLMV in order to strengthen the mathematics community. For Khon Kaen University, it is also the opportunity to celebrate our 60th Anniversary.”

The event was officially opened by Prof. Monchai Duangchinda, Ph.D., Vice President for Research and Graduate Study of Khon Kaen University while Emeritus Professor Yongwimon Lenburee, Ph.D>, Director of the Center of Excellence in Mathematics, Mahidol University, who is the chairman of the PME Regional Conference 2023, delivered the welcoming speech.

H.E. Prof. Dr. Chan Roath. President of Cambodian Mathematical Society and Director of New Generation Pedagogical Research Center, Cambodia, talked about the importance of PME Regional conference that it is comparable to the knowledge festival and a chance to smoothly drive forward the mechanism of progress. The conference this time is like taking a part of Cambodia to join the international brainstorming and to share our perspectives, challenges and success.

“This conference is not only a meeting venue, but also the projection of contribution of Cambodia with other countries in exchanging ideas and building collaboration that will lead to good changes in our country.”

Mr. Soutchanthong Chanthavong.  Director of Khangkhay Teacher Training College, stated that this conference is very important for Lao PDR because a great number of researchers from Laos were joining. It was a good chance to share various ideas in research and mathematics. The researchers had a chance to cross over towards the international level in presenting their academic works and collect information and knowledge from the conference back home for further extension. At the same time, they expected that such international conference will be organized again in the ASEAN and Me Kong Region countries.

PME Regional Conference 2023 was packed with academic activities all through the 3 days from December 2 thru December 4. The highlight included the plenary lecture in 3 topics: Learning to Think Mathematically in Thai Classroom using Thailand Lesson Study incorporated with Open Approach (TLSOA) by Assoc. Prof. Maitree Inprasitha, Ph.D., President of the Mathematics Education Association and Vice President for Education and Academic Service of Khon Kaen University; the development of failure to learn mathematics: complexity, commognition, and identity โดย Assoc. Prof. Dr. Einat Heyd-Metzuyanim Technion – Israel Institute of Technology, Israel; and Introspective thinking and contemplative thinking in mathematical communication the power of seeing the invisible to overcome a fragmented world by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Hideyo Emori, Otani University from Japan. In addition, there were 49 research presentations by the participants, 13 of which were Research Report (RR), 19 of which were Oral Communication (OC), and 17 were Poster Presentations (PP).
