Khon Kaen University (KKU) was established as the major university in the Northeastern part of Thailand in 1964 and has developed itself to become one of the top universities in Thailand. Khon Kaen University has recently become one of the nine national research universities in Thailand and an educational center in the Mekong sub-region. The university’s major mission is to prepare future global citizens to work in a continually changing world. KKU’s strategic goal is to be recognized both internationally and regionally as a leading university in research. KKU currently has more than 40,000 students studying in 17 faculties, 1 satellite campus, 1 school, and 3 colleges and in 43 International/English programs which cover a wide variety of disciplines.
Our campus serves as the leading educational and learning centre of the Northeastern region. It is conveniently located a few kilometers from the center of the city and is situated on a large, safe, and attractive site of green fields measuring 900 hectares. Khon Kaen University aims to become one of the 3 leading universities in the country, one of the 80 leading universities ranked in Asia, and one of 400 leading universities ranked in the world by the year 2015.
KKU is looking to become a leader in medicine including public health and tropical health; tropical agriculture and farming (animal science and plant science), bio- diversity in the Greater Mekong Sub-region; arts, culture and social, economic, business and tourism sectors in the Greater Mekong Sub region.

For the quality of organizational management KKU is one of 4 higher educational institutions that has been certified for quality at the Fundamental Level (FL) for its governmental management by the Office of the Public Sector Development Commission Thailand (OPDC).
KKU research study is rated first in Asia and the 5th in the world for its research work on Liver Fluke infection and mechanisms and its cancer development which has been published in international journal as the largest circulation in Asia rated by Elsevier in 2010. It has also produced more research work on the Parasitology on Liver Fluke making KKU one of the top five universities in the world that has published work on Cholangiocarcinoma Research for the largest circulation during the year 2000 - 2010, as ranked by the data base of ISI Web of Science.
In 2006, The Office of the Higher Education Commission (OHEC) ranked KKU as a University of Excellence in teaching, learning and research study.
The Office of the Public Sector Development Commission Thailand (OPDC) ranked KKU to be the best university (No 1) for consecutive three years in 2006, 2007 ((in the group of the same mission) and 2009.
The Office for National Education Standards and Quality Assessment (Public Organization), (ONESQA) ranked KKU to be a Very Good level in 2007.
In 2008, Times Higher Education ranked KKU to be the 528th in the world for the world leading university, and No 21st of ASIAN universities.
