With hope that people will become aware of the importance of the disease – the campaign is: “Do not let paralysis become a part of your life.”
October 22, 2019 at the hall on the 1st Floor, Sirikunakorn Building, Office of the President, Khon Kaen University – Srinagarind Hospital, Faculty of Medicine and the Northeast Stroke Research Group held an event to campaign against paralysis and physical disability on the occasion of the World Stroke Day 2019. Asst. Prof. Dr. Tala Thammaroj, M.D., Acting Khon Kaen University President presided over the opening ceremony. Ajarn Natsamol Tanakulrangsarit, Assistant to the President for Special Affairs took part in the event.
Assoc. Prof. Somsak Tiamkao, M.D., Deputy Director of Srinagarind Hospital, as the project organizer, conveyed the reporting speech. The World Stroke Organization (WSO) set October 29 of every year as the World Stroke Day. Stroke or paralysis is the world’s major health problem and an important cause of death. The number of stroke patients all over the world has now reached 80 million people, of which 50 million or 62.5% being paralyzed. From the public health statistical report for the 10-year period (2007 – 2016), the mortality rate from the disease showed an increasing trend. The mortality rate was 29.1- 48.7 per 100,000 people and the proportion of stroke patients was 330.60 – 425.24 per 100,000. It has also been shown that every 4 minutes, one Thai person is found having stroke. Therefore, educating people about the disease is important for this will enable them to protect themselves from the risk factors. A campaign against it is expected to prevent at least 50,000 stroke patients from paralysis and physical disability, lessening the medical cost at roughly 100,000 baht/person/year.
The activity on this day was aimed at acknowledging the patients, those coming to the hospital and others about paralysis, so that they are alert and aware of the importance of the disease. The campaign words this year are: “Do not let paralysis become a part of your life.” The event included basic health examination, consultation, exhibition, booths showing brain-protection foods, campaign and video clip showing of the World Stroke Day – “happy (no) paralysis day” and “Do not let paralysis become a part of your life” by Assoc. Prof. Somsak Tiamkao, M.D.; Khun Thitiyan Jantanaphupa and Khun Jantra Lapontan, who have direct experience as a patient and a patient caregiver.
A lot of people and mass media came to the event to have their physical check from 9:00 a.m. People were also interested in the exhibitions and the talk. At the end, there was demonstration on care giving to stroke patients.
Asst. Prof. Dr. Tala Thammaroj, M.D., Acting Khon Kaen University President explained in his opening speech that this activity is very useful for people since at present stroke and paralysis are the very important public health problem and the cause of death, with an increasing trend. Therefore, campaign against it and health promotion to prevent the disease is important. Different technologies can now be used so that the patients, those receiving medical service and people in general will understand about the disease and paralysis. People will then become alert and aware of the importance of the disease. More importantly, they will be able to know how to receive medical care in time. This activity will help promote self health care, leading to good health and safety from the disease and paralysis.
