Khon Kaen lit up with cinematic brilliance as the 8th Kaen Film Festival took center stage from December 8-12, 2024. Hosted by Khon Kaen University in collaboration with public and private sector networks, the festival celebrated the vibrant creativity of Isan and its growing influence on the global film industry. The grand opening ceremony, held on December 12 at Khon Kaen Hall, Central Plaza, was graced by Ms. Sasithon Suwanmanee, Chief Inspector General of the Ministry of Culture, Mr. Prachuap Rakpheat, Deputy Governor of Khon Kaen Province, and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Niyom Wongpongkham, Vice President for Arts, Culture, and Creative Economy at Khon Kaen University. The event drew a star-studded crowd, including renowned directors, actors from Thailand and neighboring ASEAN countries, faculty members, students, and film enthusiasts.
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Niyom Wongpongkham highlighted the festival’s alignment with Khon Kaen University’s 2025-2028 strategy to foster internationalization and societal impact:
“This festival is more than just a platform for young talent—it’s a launchpad for the regional film industry. The creativity we’ve seen from the 84 competing teams is a testament to Isan’s potential. By blending art, culture, and innovation, the Kaen Film Festival is not just a competition but a driving force behind Thailand’s creative economy. It’s a stepping stone to elevate Thai cinema onto the global stage.”
Mr. Prachuap Rakpheat emphasized Khon Kaen’s ambition to become the creative economy hub of Isan:
“The Kaen Film Festival is a landmark event that puts Khon Kaen on the map of the national creative industry. It inspires the next generation, attracts film industry investments, and aligns with our vision to promote cultural tourism and the creative economy.”
Adding to the excitement, Ms. Sasithon Suwanmanee underscored the festival’s role in advancing the government’s Soft Power policy through the “5Fs” (Food, Film, Fashion, Fighting, and Festival):
“This festival is a shining example of how local arts and culture can be transformed into economic value. By showcasing Isan’s unique identity through film, we’re bringing its rich culture to the world stage.”
Festival Highlights: A Celebration of Creativity and Culture
The 8th Kaen Film Festival was packed with exciting activities that celebrated the region’s artistic and cultural vibrancy:
“Zaab” (Spicy) Short Film Competition: A thrilling contest featuring 84 teams, with 20 finalists showcasing their creative takes on the theme “Zaab”.
“Cinema and Conversations”: A curated selection of quality films from ASEAN countries, screened at the Cultural Courtyard and Art Gallery of Khon Kaen University.
Thought-Provoking Film Discussions: Panels such as “If You Want It Done Right, Do It Yourself!” and “The Future Holds the Key to Filmmakers’ Solutions”, led by directors and industry experts, offered insights into the challenges and opportunities in filmmaking. These sessions were held at Focus Arena and the Buddhist Art Conference Room at the Center for Arts and Culture, Khon Kaen University.
A Collaborative Effort to Build a Creative Future
The festival was made possible through the support of key organizations, including the Ministry of Culture, the Department of Cultural Promotion, the Thailand Creative & Culture Agency (TCCA), and the Thai Film Industry Network. Together, these efforts aim to position Khon Kaen as a regional hub for the film industry while fostering sustainable development of film industry professionals.
