In a remarkable cultural exchange initiative, the Department of Performance Practice from Khon Kaen University’s Faculty of Fine Arts recently showcased Thailand’s rich cultural heritage in India’s northeastern state of Arunachal Pradesh. The delegation, comprising Asst. Prof. Dr. Pongsatorn Yoddumnean and nine talented students, participated in two prestigious festivals from November 27 to December 6, 2024.
The team’s first destination was the “Theatre in the Land of Dawn-Lit Mountains” festival, part of Arunachal Rang Mahotsav 2024, which brought together 30 national and international productions. The KKU performers captivated audiences with their presentation of “Phaya Phrom Chak,” a contemporary adaptation of the Lanna-style Ramayana, masterfully directed by Mr. Krit Chaisinboon in collaboration with artists from Sao Hai (Wimonwittayanukul) School.
The cultural journey continued in Namsai, Arunachal Pradesh, where the team participated in the “Poi Pee Mau Tai 2119: Tai New Year Festival 2024.” This unique celebration, themed “Rediscovering Tai Ethnicity,” held special significance as Namsai is home to the Tai-Kadai ethnic group, sharing cultural roots with Southeast Asian communities. The KKU performers presented two distinctive pieces: the graceful Fon Phu Thai Renu Nakhon Dance from Upper Isan Region and the dynamic Ruem Jub Krub Dance from Lower Isan Region.
This international engagement not only provided invaluable cross-cultural learning experiences for the students but also strengthened Khon Kaen University’s position as a leading institution in cultural preservation and artistic excellence. The successful cultural exchange demonstrates the university’s commitment to fostering international understanding through the performing arts while preserving and promoting Thai cultural heritage on the global stage.
