The Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, Khon Kaen University, by Dean Orathai Piayura, sent three supporting staff whose work involved using English skills to reskill and upskill at the University of Leeds, the United Kingdom, from 2nd – 13th May 2023.
Under a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the two institutions signed on 8th November 2022, the staff participated in the General English Course of the Language Centre, a part of the School of Languages, Cultures, and Societies. The course provided daily communication skills improvement in English and learning more about British culture. The activities included interactive and communicative activities emphasising talking and sharing opinions on subjects such as Animal World, Animal Extinction, and Animal Sanctuary. In addition, the participants were urged to build self-confidence in their language usage actively. Also, the teacher assigned homework tasks that involved each student examining different aspects of the same article, news, and video before discussing their findings in class.
At the end of the course, the participants joined the “GE Fun Fair” by organising a stall with their team members. The students were divided into eight teams. Each team was responsible for managing a fun game to collect fake money (bank notes made only for this activity) from the other team members as much as possible. The only team with the funniest game would collect most of the bank notes to win in this activity. The fun and interactive fair allowed the participants to engage freely in a stress-free environment while practising their language skills.
The Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences aims to organise more reskills and upskills projects under the MoU for its teaching and supporting staff soon.
