Japanese Embassy delegation makes an official visit to KKU to promote Thailand-Japan relationship and offer guidelines for students’ continuing education

February 23, 2022 – Khon Kaen University led by Assoc. Prof. Charnchai Panthongviriyakul, M.D., President of the University welcomed Mr. UCHIDA Takeshi, First Secretary of the Japanese Embassy in Thailand, the Japan Student Services Organization (JASSO) of Japan, Faculty of Education, Khon Kaen University, and the Northeast Japanese Alumni Association on the occasion of the 21st Japan Education Fair. The event was organized with an aim to discuss collaboration in different aspects between Japan and Khon Kaen University. Asst. Prof. Acharawan Tophak-ngarm, Ph.D., Assistant to the President for International Affairs; Assoc. Prof. Sumalee Chaicharoen, Ph.D., Dean of the Faculty of Education; Asst. Prof. Sarawut Jakpeng, Ph.D., Acting Deputy Director of Khon Kaen University Demonstration School (Primary level), Faculty of Education attended the event with over 30 members of Japanese alumni and officers from Japanese Embassy. The event was organized both onsite at Room 1507, 5th Floor, and online at ED-TEAL Room, 4th Floor, Faculty of Education, Khon Kaen University.

Mr. UCHIDA Takeshi, the First Secretary of the Japanese Embassy in Thailand thanked everyone for the interest in Japan. Universities in Japan have carried out world-class research works, and the number of Japanese receiving Nobel Prizes in Science is only second to US. Studying in Japan gives students opportunities to experience different cultures. Japan is a country that is clean and safe. Students and people who work there do not have to worry about working while studying. They will be able to understand the working culture of Japanese people, a chance they will never get if they are only tourists. There are over 5,000 companies in Japan where people can apply to work. Thailand and Japan has had good relationships in economy, diplomacy, and education. This visit to Khon Kaen University is to strengthen the relationship and support education of both countries. It is hoped that more Thai students will go to study in Japan, just like at present more Japanese students come to study in Thailand. Mr. Takeshi finally thanked Khon Kaen University for the warm welcome.

Assoc. Prof. Charnchai Panthongviriyakul, M.D., President of the University said in his welcoming speech: “Japanese Embassy has been regularly supporting higher education and providing chances for students to have access to education. We can see that the Japan Education Fair is organized every year. This year is the 21st time, where we will learn valuable information from Japan that will lead to more academic and research collaboration between Thai universities and famous universities in Japan.”

“Until today, Khon Kaen University has signed MOUs with 84 academic and research institutions in Japan. For 22 years, the following parties have worked together intensively: the Japanese Embassy, the Northeast Japanese Alumni Association. Khon Kaen University and the Japanese Embassy have cooperated in developing educational innovations that respond to the 21st Century human resource development. Khon Kaen University trusts that the good understanding and friendship between Thailand and Japan will continue to grow along with the higher degree of creative collaboration that will enhance academic and research works and many other fields to come in the future.”

Assoc. Prof. Sumalee Chaicharoen, Ph.D., Dean of the Faculty of Education added that the Faculty also has had a long-term relationship with the Japanese Embassy through the Japan Education Fair that is organized every year. There is an undergraduate degree program offered by the Faculty that trains students to learn Japanese language, and many of the Faculty students have been granted scholarships to go to Japan for training. The Faculty is grateful to the Embassy of Japan for the visit today. The Dean finally wished the delegates enjoyable trip in Khon Kaen.

The visit of the Japanese delegation from the Japanese Embassy in Thailand is an honor occasion for Khon Kaen University. The activities on the day are useful for school and university students in the Northeast. The organization of this event was coordinated by the Northeast Japanese Alumni Association that assisted in arranging different activities, including giving guidelines in continuing education in Japan and experiences of some alumni who studied in Japan.
